The Hygiene Philosophy: Prevention Over Cure

Because mushrooms are fungi themselves, chemical fungicides that kill competitor molds will also kill or severely poison your mushroom mycelium. In commercial cultivation, hygiene, atmospheric filtration, and biological barriers are your only sustainable defense against crop devastation.

The Big 4 Crop Threats and How to Treat Them

1. Green Mold (Trichoderma harzianum)

Symptoms: Starts as an aggressive white mycelium that rapidly sporulates into a dark emerald green powder across straw bags, choking out oyster mycelium.

Root Cause: High temperatures (>28°C), under-pasteurized substrate, dirty spawning tables, or contaminated spawn.

Action Protocol:

  • Immediately isolate and incinerate infected bags outside the farm facility. Never open a green mold bag inside the grow room.
  • Spot-treat minor early infections on casing soil with a pinch of dry slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) or salt to locally raise pH above 8.5.
  • Sanitize room air by fogging with a 2% hydrogen peroxide or chlorine dioxide solution between cycles.

2. Cobweb Mold (Cladobotryum dendroides)

Symptoms: A light, cottony greyish-white web creeping swiftly across the casing layer and engulfing developing mushroom pinheads.

Root Cause: Excessive stagnant humidity (>95%), dead unharvested mushroom tissue left on beds, and poor fresh air ventilation.

Action Protocol: Cover infected patches immediately with damp paper towels sprinkled heavily with table salt to trap spores, then discard. Increase fresh air exchange to keep relative humidity strictly under 90%.

3. Sciarid & Phorid Flies (Mushroom Gnats)

Symptoms: Tiny black flies swarming near light sources. Their white larvae burrow into mushroom stems and caps, leaving brown tunnels and introducing bacterial rot.

Action Protocol:

  • Fit all air intakes and exhaust vents with 40-mesh fine insect-proof nylon netting.
  • Hang yellow and blue sticky traps (1 trap per 15 sq ft) just above the top bag tier.
  • Install ultraviolet (UV) electronic insect killers outside entry doors.
  • Spray organic Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) on the floor and drainage channels to eliminate fly larvae organically.

4. Bacterial Blotch (Pseudomonas tolaasii)

Symptoms: Yellowish-brown, slimy water-soaked lesions across mushroom caps that emit a foul odor.

Root Cause: Water droplets lingering on mushroom caps for longer than 2 to 3 hours following heavy overhead watering.

Action Protocol: Never spray water directly onto mushroom pinheads with coarse nozzles. Use automated ultrasonic misting that evaporates suspended in air. Increase fan speed for 30 minutes after watering to dry cap surfaces completely.

Daily Farm Sanitation Checklist

  1. Footbath filled with 5% bleaching powder or potassium permanganate solution at every entryway.
  2. Clean harvested stumps and bio-waste from floors within 30 minutes of picking.
  3. Daily record of temperature, RH, and air exchange in the farm logbook.
